Come join Mrs. Susina for the Hooked on Books Club!

We will meet Tuesday, February 2nd during recess. The February book club selection is “The Adventures of a South Pole Pig” by Chris Kurtz. This is a 2016 Bluestem Award nominee.

Flora the pig was born for adventure: “If it’s unexplored and needs to get dug up, call me. I’m your pig,” she says. The day Flora spots a team of sled dogs is the day she sets her heart on becoming a sled pig. Before she knows it, she’s on board a ship to Antarctica for the most exhilarating—and dangerous—adventure of her life. This poignant novel of a purposeful pig is sure to become a favorite with any young readers who have ever dreamed of exploring the great beyond.

Thank you for a very successful book fair! I know that many boys and girls (and hopefully parents, too!) went home with some wonderful books. Scholastic does give us a percent of what was made and we plan on purchasing non-fiction books for both SBPS libraries.

A special thank you to our book fair team: Diann DeSantis, Adriana Fernandez, Margaret Finnigan, Julie Fox, and Pat Pigoni.

Check It Out! Week of December 14th

caldecott_award.jpg

This week, we will be talking about the upcoming Caldecott and Newbery Awards. These are two of the awards given by the American Library Association (ALA) for the most distinguished illustrated and written books in children’s literature for the current year. The medal and honor winners will be announced on Monday, January 11th.

We are looking at a few possible Caldecott contenders that have gotten some good “buzz” this year so far and I will be sharing some more, along with Newbery titles, the week that we come back from the Christmas break. Once I know the winners, I will bring those books in to share with the students and we will discuss why we think those particular titles were awarded.

Volunteers Needed for the Book Fair

We are looking for volunteers to help out during the Scholastic Book Fair next week on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday during the day. Volunteers need to be Virtus-approved.

Our younger students need extra help figuring out prices of books, what they can buy with their money, and if they have enough money to pay for the books they pick out.

Please email Mrs. Susina if you are able to donate some of your time. Thanks in advance!
