This week, our kindergartners through second graders will celebrate author/illustrator Lois Ehlert’s birthday! Ehlert’s book, “The Scraps Book,” is a 2016 Monarch Award nominee. She is also well-known for the classic book, “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.”

In grades 3-5, we will finish reading the 2016 Bluestem nominee, “Alex the Parrot: No Ordinary Bird.” We will also watch a video so that the students can watch some of Irene’s work with Alex. So far, they seem to be really enjoying seeing Alex in action!

This week, we are talking about comic books and graphic novels. These books have been VERY popular with our students recently. Last year, two of our most attended book clubs for grades 3-5 included graphic novel books. This form of visual storytelling is great for all ages!

We will be specifically talking about the similarities and differences between comic books and graphic novels, as well as the vocabulary used when talking about comics. We will continue to revisit the topic of comics and graphic novels throughout the rest of the school year. The kids seem very excited!

“Piper Green and the Fairy Tree” earned a lot of thumbs up from the Booked for Recess Club yesterday!

We will be taking a break in December due to the book fair and the shorter month, but will meet again in January.

Our next book will be “The Chocolate Touch” by Patrick Skene Catling. I will send home print flyers in early December.
